Principal's Message Term 3 Week 7 - 2023
Dear Parents
As a Catholic learning community,
all at Mother Teresa School are called
to care, to dream, to innovate, to inspire!
Special congratulations to Sophia Caputo on her engagement to Hugo. It was a very special occasion that occurred during her recent overseas trip. We are all very excited for the beautiful couple.
Spring is here and with it brings many allergies. Please ensure we have your child's medication as I know once we start cutting the grass we will see many watery eyes, hear lots of sneezing, and runny noses.
Community Council Open Meeting
Next Tuesday evening 5 September, commencing at 6.00 pm, we will be holding our next open Community Council meeting in the school staffroom. The meetings will run for about 1.5 hours. Parents are most welcome to attend and join in the discussion. Happy for parents to RSVP to carmel.maguire@cg.catholic.edu.au.
Parnet Teacher Conference Term 3
The teachers will be available in Week 9 to provide parents with an update on how their child is progressing. Parents invited to attend a personal plan meeting do not need to double up and book a 10-minute check-in meeting. The booking schedule will open on Monday 4 September, by 11.00 am

Congratulations again to all on what was a terrific and successful day at the track. Also a huge thank you to Mr Geoff Howarth and Mrs Jessica Binet for their help at the carnival.
Cross Country Nationals
Congratulations to Nikos V who competed in the Cross Country Nationals on the weekend. A great run with his relay team finishing second.
A Return to the Past
Year 4 had a wonderful time being immersed in Convict activities and learning about the convicts who worked at the Lanyon Homestead. A great two days back to the past.
Are You Leaving MTS
We are receiving lots of enquiries for enrolment in all grades across the school. If you are aware of a possible move, please adviseas soon as possible. This will help with our planning for 2024.

WHOLE SCHOOL FOCUS
The Whole school focus theme for this year is ‘Walking Together’.
Our value for the next two weeks is: RESPECT
We can show this in the Mother Teresa School way by:
- Treating people the way we want to be treated.
- Playing by the rules and take turns.
- Telling the truth.
- Listening to other people’s ideas.
- Being considerate of other people’s feelings.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION / RECONCILIATION
Please keep these children and their families in your prayers as they prepare to celebrate their First Holy Communion. A special reminder to all those students, Jesus Day for Mother Teresa students is Friday 8 September. Parents, please check Compass and send in permission for students to attend. All the children are very excited and cannot wait to receive their First Holy Communion.
Please save the date:
St Teresa of Calcutta
School Feast Day Tuesday 5 September
Liturgy hosted By Year 6 Ink & Charcoal
This year we will be doing things a little differently to ensure the true spirit of St Teresa of Calcutta is celebrated in the humble way in which she would appreciate.
Students are asked to wear ‘odd socks’. Please do not to go out and purchase any new items but to be in solidarity with those who do not have much. The money saved can be donated to ‘Catholic Mission’ instead.
All students are to bring in please. Teachers will be collecting the money in their classroom.
22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 3 September 2023 - Year A
“All who wish to follow me must deny themselves.”
Something to Think About
Jesus and Peter were close friends. Think about the people who are your close friends. Have you sometimes had a disagreement? What were some of the 'growing points' in your friendship. Maybe it was allowing your friend to help you. Maybe it was sharing an important experience with them. Maybe it was having to ask forgiveness for something.
The Story
Jesus tells his disciples that he is going to suffer, die and rise again. Peter (as usual) does not fully comprehend what Jesus is saying. How often does Peter miss the point! More than this, Peter protests strongly and dares to try to tell Jesus that this should not happen! Jesus' response to Peter comes out in very strong language indeed! He calls Peter an obstacle and a hindrance to the will of God. It would seem Peter might think he is the leader and Jesus is the disciple! Are there times when you try to tell Jesus what to do - or what you would like him to do for you?
Save the date! MTS Community Health Hub – Thursday 7th September 2023
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We are excited to be presenting the first MTS Community Health Hub to our school community. We are dedicated to increasing our sense of belonging and strengthening our community ties, via a variety of initiatives.
We would value your support and attendance of this event to ensure it can continue and grow into the future. Please grab a cuppa and come into the School Hall to see the wonderful showcase of Community Groups. We have 22 community groups attending, who will happily share and discuss the wonderful programs, supports and activities that they provide. Here is a sample of the Community Groups and some of the supports they provide:
- Gungahlin Child and Family Centre – free drop in and ongoing parenting support, child behaviour support, early intervention and wellbeing support programs (Cool Little Kids, Cool Kids, Tuning into Kids and Bringing up Great Kids).
- Child Development Service – Drop in Clinics for Speech, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapist support for children. Woman’s support services including return to work grants, childcare, social interactions, multicultural networks and mental health support networks.
- Multicultural Hub – If you are new to Canberra and want to chat to someone about accommodation, employment, schools, children/family services including childcare or finding friends, come and say hi to the Multicultural Support Team. The Multicultural Hub Canberra is a provider of settlement services and support for newly arrived migrants and refugees in the ACT who have been in Australia for five years or less.
- ArtKids - ArtKids is an after-school art and drawing program that focuses on building children's drawing and observational skills - the fundamentals of all art-making - in a fun, supportive, confidence-building environment. ArtKids also offer ArtTots for 3-5 year olds. ArtTots facilitators provide a fun, guided art experience where children build confidence as they are encouraged to think creatively, imaginatively and independently. Combining literature, music and art, these 45 minute sessions allow your child to explore the creative process through mark making and using different mediums, responding to literature and music.
- Gungahlin Library – Book Clubs for all, Sensory Story time, Gardening Tips, Guest Speakers, Early Literacy, online Boredom Busters and many, many more interactive groups.
- Pam’s Pantry - a street pantry of toys, crafts, books and other accessories for people who may be in need. Come and see Pam and ask about volunteering, donating or accessing support.
- Wildbark (Mulligan’s Flat) – Many events run through Wildbark including Fun Runs and Holiday Programs. Wildbark provides children and families with memorable moments to discover Australian animals and wonders of the natural world. From the grassy-woodlands to the Box-gum lined trails, during the school holidays our younger guests will enjoy beyond the fence experiences that will inspire a connection to the land whilst sharing the important work we are doing to one day eradicate extinction of all Australian Animals. Our main objectives during the holiday program is for us to entertain learning through the magic of play so your young person can have fun, make new friendships, and hopefully provide them with memories that last a lifetime.
In addition, we welcome the following Community Groups:
- Abilities Unlimited
- Bike Library Project
- Men of MTS
- Northside Community Services
