Dear Parents and Carers,

Staffing news

Please note the following staff arrangements and changes occurring around the school

  • Next week, we farewell Mrs Neha John, who has taken a full-time position at St Clare's College, working in their classroom support areas. Neha's position has been advertised.
  • Unfortunately, Mrs Danielle Cooper will be away from next Tuesday for approximately four weeks as she is required to undergo surgery on her shoulder. We are still to arrange a replacement teacher.
  • Miss Kate Higgins is currently on leave until the end of Week 5.
  • Next Thursday, Miss Carly Salmon is heading to England to participate in the  CommBank Paramatildas Women's Intercontinental Cup. Carly has been named Captain of the team. Wishing the team lots of success.
  • Commencing on Monday, we have two staff completing their final seven-week teaching prac with ACU - Miss Maddie Greenwood and Miss Brianna Gray.

Science week

Next week we are celebrating Science Week at MTS. This years theme is Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language.

Students are invited to create a balloon-powered car to see how far it can go. We look forward to seeing some incredible designs!

Boorowa Netball and Touch Carnival

This year we are currently only offering the students in Years 5 & 6 with the opportunity to attend this year’s carnival. This decision hasn’t been made lightly but is impacted by the number of available staff who have indicated they are available to attend this longer day to ensure we maintain the correct teacher/student ratio and the declining number of children in the lower grades taking up the offer of participation in recent gala day competitions. I know this will be disappointing news for some families.

Author visit
This week the Year 3 to 6 students were treated to a visit from an inspirational writer, Katrina Nannestad. Katrina is an Australian author who grew up in country New South Wales in a neighbourhood full of happy children. Her adult years have been spent raising boys, teaching, daydreaming, perfecting her recipe for choc-chip bickies and pursuing her love of stories.  Katrina celebrates family, friendship and belonging in her writing. She loves creating stories that bring joy to other people’s lives.

On Thursday, our Year 6 Youth Ministry Team visited classes from ELC to Year 6 and led class prayer, celebrating the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. In the Catholic Church, a Feast Day is a special day when we remember and thank God for the lives of holy people who showed us how to love and follow Jesus. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus told us that every time we help someone, even with something small, we are helping Him. Mary MacKillop took this to heart. She didn’t just feel sad when she saw someone in need … she did something. She started schools for children who didn’t have one, she comforted the sick and she stood up for what was right, even when it was hard.

The Sports Spectacle

Yesterday an important compass event went out for the Year 5 & 6's. I sent out the Expression of Interest for the upcoming Touch and Netball Carnival in Boorowa, which is set to kick off in early Term 4. Just a heads-up: there will be no late nominations—if you don't complete the current notes by August 18th, you might as well start practicing your sad face!

Logan Blain and Lachlan Rodda are concluding their U12 ACT Boys AFL this Sunday. Parents have noted that they've played with more passion than a romantic film and demonstrated sportsmanship that could make even the sternest referee smile. Great job, boys! I've heard the competition was tough, but fortunately, the weather was perfect.

Good luck to our incredible students trialing for the ACT U12 Girls Netball Team. I have a sneaky suspicion we might have a few future Diamonds among us—no pressure, right?

The Athletics note went out to invited students who have qualified to compete in the North Gunghalin Track and Field Event. Please respond promptly so that I can invite another student from our school if you do not wish to attend.

If you’re off to trials or competing in a competition on the weekend, don’t be shy—send me an email! I’d love to hear all about your adventures (and maybe live vicariously through your athletic prowess)!

Upcoming Events

  • Years 3/4 Boys Oztag Gala Days (20 August)
  • North Gungahlin Track and Field (4 September)

Mini Magic and Luminosity Shine at Aussie Gold!

What an incredible weekend it was for our cheer teams, Mini Magic and Luminosity, as they took the stage at their very first competition of the year.

Both teams performed their full routines in front of a big crowd, and Luminosity achieved a “Hit Zero” score. This means they completed their routine with no falls, errors, or deductions. This is a huge accomplishment in cheerleading and a true reflection of all their hard work at training.

And the results? We couldn’t be prouder!

  • Mini Magic placed 1st in the Primary Novice division.
  • Luminosity placed 1st in the Primary division and were awarded the title of Scholastic Grand Champions. They were the highest-scoring school team of the day!

Beyond the medals and sashes, the day was filled with energy, excitement, and plenty of team spirit. Cheerleaders had a fantastic time encouraging and supporting each other, soaking up the competition atmosphere, and proudly wearing their sparkly uniforms. It was fun, rewarding… and just a little bit exhausting!

The teams will now focus on perfecting their routines for the end-of-year performance at the school and Cheercon ‘Best of the Best’ Nationals in Sydney later this year.

** Calling all year 1 to 3 students - there are positions open in the Mini Magic team. If you are interested in joining MTS Cheerleading for the rest of the year, please contact cheermts@gmail.com for more information or to organise a trial session. No experience required. **

The MTS Yearbook request for photos

The Mother Teresa School Yearbook has been confirmed for 2025, but this year, we are going to need your help to get it across the line.

Families that have been with us for a few years would know that each year, with the help of our school committee and dedicated parents and our amazing teachers, we have produced a 200 page, professionally printed yearbook featuring all classes and highlighting the momentous occasions and experiences throughout the year.

The Yearbook has always been wonderfully received in the school community and are great keepsakes for the children to reflect on their journey here. To help in that undertaking we are hoping for your assistance

We would specifically like to request any photos from the events that have occurred in term 1 while they are fresh on your memories

-swimming carnival

-Reconciliation

-Harmony day

- Excursions

If families have any photos or if you’re attending school events (sporting, social etc) and you take any photos we’d love for you to snap and send a few back to us to use in the yearbook (appropriate permissions will be sought).

If you can help us with the above, please reach out and contact the Yearbook team via the yearbook email MTSYearbook00@gmail.com

Kind regards

Lindsay Hackett

Protective Behaviour Program

This term, our school will be teaching Protective Behaviours to students using current resources from the Daniel Morcombe Curriculum and Education 2 Empower Publishing. We understand the content of Protective Behaviours can be confronting for some students, and we are therefore keen to ensure there is an opportunity for families to engage with the content before lessons are taught. To achieve this, an overview of the program is attached and weekly updates will be provided.
