Principal's Report Term 2 Week 8 - 2021
Dear parents,
Thank you to the approximately 80 families who responded to the traffic survey. The responses have been sent to both Transport Canberra and City Services as well as the engineer conducting the current traffic study.
The responses looked at how to improve traffic flow, safety and reduce congestion at peak times. All three are linked and there were a wide range of suggestions. One that caught my attention that I had not considered before is to block Wimmera Street at the bridge between MTS and the child-care centre. Wimmera St would not be such a thoroughfare, and both schools together with the childcare centre could be accessed by their families. This would improve safety while also assisting with cars exiting MTS. We will wait and see what the study suggests.
The enrollment period for 2022 has closed and next week I meet with Catholic Education and the principals of Good Shepherd and Holy Spirit schools to look at enrollments across Gungahlin. Offers of place will be sent by email to families on the 25th June and acceptances need to be returned by 23rd July. If you have any questions, please contact the front office.
Well done, to all our students that represented MTS at futsal on Monday, North Canberra/Gungahlin Chess Championships on Tuesday and the Big Sing, aussie rules and rugby union today.
Maths Problem
Congratulations to Evelyn Huynh who had the first correct entry drawn out this week. It was good to see a lot more entries.
Very fast
I recently read an article about a young athlete breaking one of Usain Bolt’s sprinting records.
Usain Bolt was one of the world’s best-known runners. The Jamaican sprinter, now retired, won 8 Olympic gold medals and 11 world championship gold medals. He is the only sprinter to have won gold in both the 100m and 200m at three consecutive Olympics.
Last year Erriyon Knighton broke Usain Bolt’s under 18, 200 metre record by running 20.11 seconds.
In another famous race Miss Ceccato ran 26 seconds for the 200m when she was under 12 at the McKillop Catholic Schools Championships. The record still stands today.
Can you work out the average speed to run ten metres given the time for both Usain Bolt and Miss Ceccato?
Then compare yourself to Usain Bolt. Measure out two ten metre lengths and get someone to time you running the second ten metres. How fast did you run the ten metres? How long would it take you to run the 200 metres at that speed?
