On April 4th Year 3 and Year 5 spent an hour involved in a presentation delivered by Sonia and Josh from the Migrant and Refugee Settlement Services (MARSS). The talk centred around the idea of being racist and the negative impact that this has on individuals. Josh was an immigrant from South Sudan who arrived in Canberra as a teenager after his family was displaced from their home. He shared a story from when he was a teenager where another boy at school had been particularly racist towards him. Josh told about the amazing impact of another boy who stood up for him; in fact they are still friends! Josh talked about John as being ‘his superhero’! This story and the lasting impact of John’s interaction with Josh was very impactful and helped the students understand the positive effect actions based in love have on us all.
