Principal's Report Week 1 Term 1 - 2021
Dear parents,
Last week I received news that the man missing following a snorkelling/diving trip to the coast, was the father of children in our school. This is a devastating and traumatic time for the entire family as well as their friends. To complicate matters the mother has been taken to Sydney to give birth by cesarian to their third child this Friday. The children have travelled to Sydney with their mother.
I ask everyone to keep this family in their thoughts and prayers as they try to negotiate their way through this terrible event.
As a school we will be holding a sausage sizzle on Friday 12th March to raise funds to support the family moving forward. The Korean Association has set up a go fund me page for the family should anyone wish to make a donation. Parent Information Night
Next Tuesday at 6pm we will be holding our Parent Information Sessions for 2021. The sessions will run for 25 minutes and will outline what concepts will be taught this term as well as provide organisational details. Teachers will also answer any questions parents may have.
Each year level will run two sessions with the first session running from 6pm – 6.25pm and the second from 6.35pm – 7pm. To help us comply with COVID restrictions, Kindergarten to Year 2 will split the parents attending their sessions into two groups to ensure we have smaller numbers in each room. As the older grades tend to get less attendees, they will have all parents attending their sessions in one group.
An overview of the content from each grade will be sent home to parents that are unable to attend.
Swimming Carnival
Today we were fortunate, given the inclement weather, to be able to hold our swimming carnival. It was a day enjoyed by all and a wonderful way to start the year. Thank you to all the students for their co-operation and enthusiasm and congratulations to the swimmers that have been chosen to represent MTS at the regional carnival. Thank you to the parents and staff for their assistance throughout the day. A special thank you to Mr Roweth for his organisation which is always a huge effort in the first week of school.
Classroom Helpers
COVID rules have been relaxed to allow parent helpers back into schools. I know many classes will be asking for parent helpers at the Parent Information Night next Tuesday.
Parents that volunteer must come through the front office to sign in and use hand sanitiser. If you intend to be a regular volunteer you will need a Working with Vulnerable People Card (WWVP). You will need to apply for a WWVP card at Access Canberra. Cards are free for volunteers.
Maths Problem
Each week I put a maths problem in the newsletter. All students can try to answer the question and submit a solution. To submit an answer, they simply send it to the front office in their note bag or email a solution directly to me. All entries must be in by Wednesday.
The first correct answer drawn out wins the weekly prize of a $2 canteen voucher and a handball.
This week’s problem is below.
Six people are playing a game of tug o' war. The people are split into two teams. The contest ended in a draw as neither team was able to pull the other over. Using the information below, who is on each team?
Force applied per person (Newtons)
Anita 165 N, Steve 162 N, Ken - 172 N, Laila 159 N, Malik 223 N, Samir 207 N.
Reminders
- Parents using the drive through pick up at the front of the hall in the afternoon are requested to please make a sign with the child's surname on it and put it on the dashboard when picking up your children. This makes the process of placing children in cars much easier.
- After school, children are NOT permitted to play on the equipment as we need to ensure all children have a responsible adult with them. Once the rush at the end of school has passed, the teacher on duty will let families know when they can use the equipment. This is a safety issue.
- As the children settle into the line-up routine of a morning parents are asked to move away from where the children are lined up. Moving to either side or well back makes it easier for the teacher on duty to settle the children and for classes to access their classrooms.
Wine and Cheese Night & Disco - Friday 19th Feb
All parents are invited to a wine and cheese night on Friday 19th February at 6pm under the shade structure. This is an ideal time to meet other parents and unwind.
The senior disco (Years 3 -6) will run from 6pm to 7.30pm so you can drop your older children at the disco and pop over. You are welcome to bring your younger children with you.
It may be a good idea to invite another MTS friend to meet you there. There is no cost for the Wine and Cheese night.
Second Hand Clothing
Our second hand clothing shop will be open again from Monday. We have a few volunteers who will open the shop from 8.30am to 9.00am. The days it will be open are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Commonwealth Bank School Banking Program
The Commonwealth Bank school banking program will be back from next week. We are looking for volunteers who can help out on a Wednesday morning for about 1 hour. No experience is necessary and training will be provided. If you have some time spare and would like to help out please contact the front office so that we can provide more details. If we can get 4 volunteers we could set up a roster so that you could do every second Wednesday.
Friday morning coffee van
Our Friday morning coffee van will not be here in Term 1 but will be back from Term 2. We will be sure to let you know when this starts up again!
Mother Teresa school has an official Facebook page which contains a range of information about our school. Under the auspices of the Community Council, a group of parents run Facebook pages for each year group. These pages are for meeting other parents and exchanging ideas and arranging social activities. New families are encouraged to join these groups.
Parents that join these pages are required to abide by the code of conduct that is linked to the page.
If you are after details about school events, we recommend you refer to the school communication app, Szapp, in the first instance or the official school website which has links to our official facebook page and school calendar.
I thank the parents who are managing the year level pages.

Lunchtime Activities
During the week we sent home a flyer which outlined different events that happen at lunchtimes. Please talk with your child and see if they are interested in attending one (or more) of the activities. Reminders are given to the children at the start of lunch (over the PA system) of what clubs/events are on that day and the children can just come along.
Sporting events and activities associated with Wakakirri will be advertised as they come up.
I hope that everyone has had a wonderful first week back to school.
God Bless
