Principal's Message Term 4 Week 4 - 2022
Dear Parents
Year 6 Camp
Year 6 had a wonderful time away and encountered great weather for their long awaited camp. Thank you to all the staff who attended and made this opportunity possible for the children.
Class Groups for 2023 - last call
Much care and deliberation occurs when forming our class groups. Teachers are highly professional and have the main responsibility for placing their current students in the most appropriate class for next year. Over the next two weeks, the teachers will be observing friendships to assist with class groupings. Children will be asked to identify four learning friends. Every endeavour is made to ensure a child has at least one learning friend in their class. Please chat with your child so they know who they may like to nominate.
When forming class groups we aim for an equal spread of both positive and challenging characteristics. Every care will be taken to ensure that your child is placed in the best situation to enhance learning and social development.
Confidential concerns should be brought to my attention in writing, by Monday 7 November, even if you have raised concerns in previous years. Please email directly to carmel.maguire@cg.catholic.edu.au. General concerns should be raised with your child's teacher. As Principal, I will make the final decision on all class placements. Late requests are very difficult to consider once groups are finalised.
Messages have been sent via Compass to the Year 6 parents regarding events coming up for Year 6 Students. Please check for all information and dates.
We have set aside Wednesday 16 and 23 November, between 3.30pm and 4.30 pm, for our 2023 kinder children to visit for two short orientation sessions. Information has been emailed to families. Any family who has not received the induction information should contact the school office.
The Catholic Education Commission in the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn has recommended a tuition fee increase for 2023.
Sibling discounts - CE Tuition Fees
As per the CE communication last year, CE will continue to reduce sibling discounts over the next two years to lessen the level of future tuition fee increases for all parents. The agreed schedule is as follows:
|
2021 |
2022 |
2023 |
2024 |
1st Child |
No discount |

The discount levels in 2023 remain more favourable when compared against other Catholic Dioceses in Australia. The reduction in sibling discounts is being phased to lessen the year-on-year impact for parents with two, three or four children.
As always, if fees create financial concern for you, I would encourage you to make an appointment with me to discuss how we can help. It is a policy in the Archdiocese that no student should be refused enrolment, excluded or disadvantaged because their family is unable to afford fees. Any discussion on fees would be strictly confidential.
If you have any questions regarding school fees for 2023, please feel free to contact me. Please note I am still finalising our local levies with a full schedule to be released once approved by Community Council in the coming weeks.
God bless.

To make it easier for payments to be made at Mother Teresa School, we have introduced the use of Qkr! by Mastercard, a secure and easy way to order and pay for school items from your phone at a time and place that suits you.
Please refer to the attached document for instructions on how to download the app to your phone. I have also included several screenshots from my phone so you will know what it looks like once registered.
This will become our preferred option for many school payments in the future. Additional payment options will be added as required eg, sporting events.

Supporting Children to Get enough Sleep
Sleep is important to a child’s development, growth, brain function and physical and mental wellbeing. Without adequate amounts of sleep, children struggle to play, concentrate, and learn.
When kids don’t get enough sleep over a period, we may start to see some mental and physical side effects. These may include:
- Sleepiness during the day
- Irritability
- Difficulty concentrating
- Reduced motivation
- Difficulty regulating emotions
- Learning challenges
- Increased stress
- Increased forgetfulness
- Shorter attention span
Kids Help Line provides a guide to the recommended amounts of sleep children need based upon their age group.
- 0-11 months – 14-18 hours per day
- 1-2 years – 10-14 hours per day
- 3-5 years – 10-13 hours per day
- 6-13 years – 9-11 hours per day
- 14-18 years – 8-9 hours per day
How can we assist our children in getting their optimal amount of sleep?
- Ensure kids are getting exercise and time outdoors each day
- Turn off all devices at least 30 minutes before bed
- Stick to a routine. A regular bedtime and wake up time each day can assist the body in regulating sleep.
- Create a bedtime wind down routine. Include a quiet activity before sleep such as reading or meditation.
- Avoid sugary foods and drinks for a few hours before sleep.
- Create a good sleeping environment. A room that is screen free, dark, quiet, and comfortable will aid in relaxation.
Talk to your child about sleep and see if you can work with them to figure out any factors that may be impacting their sleep.
If your child has persistent sleep problems, it can be helpful to seek professional assistance to help you figure out what might be going on. For further support with sleep concerns visit your GP or Child Health Nurse.
