Principal's Message Term 1 Week 10
Over the last few weeks, our students have been preparing special Easter videos depicting the events of Holy Week that have been shared with all the classes. This Sunday is Palm Sunday which commences Holy Week, leading to Easter Sunday. Holy Week is the most important period in the Church year ending with the Resurrection of Jesus, a time for joy and hope.
Covid Update
The ACT Roadmap for Schools was released recently and there are minor changes to Term 2. School assemblies can occur (without parents, unfortunately) and school excursions, camps and sports carnivals can also recommence. RAT kits will still be available, on request, for the first few weeks from the school office.
Pupil Free Day
On Tuesday 26 April, MTS teachers will be engaged in a valuable Catalyst day on High Impact Teaching strategies, with several other Catholic schools, conducted by Associate Professor Lorraine Hammond AM, PhD, CF from Edith Cowan University, WA. This is a wonderful opportunity for the staff to engage in high-quality professional learning to further develop the quality of learning offered to the student at MTS.
Children return to school on Wednesday 27 April
Winter uniforms are to be worn
Like us on Facebook
Stay in touch with happenings around the school by liking us on our official MTS page https://www.facebook.com/MTSHarrison. Early next term we will be reviewing our media permission for all children to ensure we have up-to-date parental permissions. Notes will be sent home early next term.
Refurbishment Update
In case you missed the latest Facebook post, our building project continues to make progress.
Students absent for 25 Days or More
Families electing to take holidays for more than 25 school days must complete an "Application for Exemption from Attendance or Enrolment" form, which is available from the office and seek formal permission from the Principal. This is a legal requirement as parents are required to carry the letter of authority when travelling.
Compass Updates
There has been a recent update to the Compass Parent Portal which has resulted in some families being unable to locate the "Absentee Note" when needing to complete this for a student who is not at school. You can now find the absentee note through the "Shortcuts" button located in the middle at the bottom of the home screen.
Working With Vulnerable People Cards
A reminder that any visitor or volunteer (when we are able to have volunteers back on site) must carry a valid ACT Working With Vulnerable People Card. This is available from Access Canberra and is free for all volunteers. It is also a reminder for those who have a card to check the expiry date and action a renewal if needed. A copy of cards must be maintained at the front office. Both sides of the card must be provided.
Just a reminder students must wear full winter uniform from the start of Term 2. Our biggest uniform concerns in Term 2 are students not wearing correct tailored regulation navy school trousers and navy beanies. Traditional black shoes and predominantly white sneakers are required. Could you please make sure when purchasing uniforms, the correct items are purchased. During Term 2 I will be working with a group of parents to develop a very clear uniform code, to be presented to the Community Council for approval. This will avoid ongoing confusion that is occurring at our local uniform stores.
The canteen will be open for online lunch orders in Week 1. Please note that students from Years 4 to 6 will collect their lunch orders at 10:20am, while Kindergarten to Year 3 will collect theirs from 11:00am.
Wishing all our families a restful and covid free break. Travel safe if you are going away & I look forward to welcoming everyone back next term.
God Bless

WHOLE SCHOOL FOCUS
The Whole school focus theme for this year is ‘Do small Things with Great Love’ and the Bible reference that supports our theme is Ephesians 2:1, in which St Paul says:
“We are God’s work of art,
Created in Christ Jesus to live the good life
As from the beginning he had meant us to live it.”
LENT & PROJECT COMPASSION
A very big thank you to everyone for your generous donations to Project Compassion this year. Once again Mother Teresa School families have come to the fore to help others: Thanks to the wonderful generosity of the children and their families, during Lent we raised over $2,230.95. Well done and congratulations everyone!
Where are they now?
Meet some of the past faces of Project Compassion campaigns whose lives have been transformed thanks to your generous support. With your generosity, Caritas Australia has been able to help millions of vulnerable people around the world, through Project Compassion.
From Thandolwayo in Zimbabwe, to Halima in Bangladesh and Shirley in the Philippines, your generosity gives vulnerable people across the world the support they need to face the challenges of today and build a better tomorrow.
Confirmation 2022
Please pray for our Year 6 Confirmation Candidates, their teachers, and families as they prepare this important sacrament. Thank you to all our Year 6 students who are showing their commitment towards their Ministry Masses. Don’t forget to bring your item of food for the ‘Food Pantry’.

The Gospel Story
Jesus had travelled all over the countryside helping people, telling them about God’s love and doing miracles. Now Jesus was preparing to come to the important city of Jerusalem. He didn’t have a horse and carriage because he wasn’t rich like a normal King, so he borrowed a donkey to ride on. The people cheered and there was a great commotion! They were excited to finally see Jesus whom they had heard so much about. People put their cloaks on the ground to cover the dirty road as a sign of respect for Jesus. They waved palm branches and sang "Hosanna!" to praise Jesus.
The Scriptures
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 19:28-40
The passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus went toward Jerusalem. As he was getting near to Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples on ahead. He told them, "Go into the next village, where you will find a young donkey that has never been ridden. Untie the donkey and bring it here. If anyone asks why you are doing that, just say, 'The Lord needs it.'"
They went off and found everything just as Jesus had said.
While they were untying the donkey, its owners asked, "Why are you doing that?"
They answered, "The Lord needs it." Then they led the donkey to Jesus.
They put some of their clothes on its back and helped Jesus get on. And as he rode along,
the people spread clothes on the road in front of him. When Jesus was starting down the Mount of Olives, his large crowd of disciples were happy and praised God because of all the miracles they had seen. They shouted, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory to God."
Some Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, make your disciples stop shouting!"
But Jesus answered, "If they keep quiet, these stones will start shouting."
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Something to Think About
When Jesus rode into Jerusalem, the people were so excited that they took palm leaves from the surrounding trees to wave in the air and to lay on the ground for Jesus.
If Jesus were to ride through your city on a donkey today, what would you do to welcome Jesus and express your joy and praise?
HOLY WEEK & EASTER LITURGUES
What a fabulous and joyous occasion we had last Tuesday at our ‘Jesus Day’ when we prayed and raised money for the Ukraine Crisis Appeal. We raised $945:85. A big thank you to all the teachers and students who participated so reverently during the liturgy. A big shout out to our wonderful teachers who pre-recorded the various Holy Week events. They did an amazing job with the students dramatizing and singing to add to the atmosphere of the events. The re-enactments helped everyone to remember the journey and struggle for Jesus. Thank you!PRAYER For Holy Week
Jesus my Lord,
let me strengthen my courage by taking on the courage of all those people who have been "centurions" for me.
Many have faced disasters and hard times with great constancy.
The upper hand of evil never turned them against you. They kept going.
Let me be like them, Lord. No matter what the cross, let me never stop
declaring you to be "truly the Son of God, the source of my hope,
the reason why I will never quit on life.
Peace and Best Wishes.

Learning to live with change and loss
Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Mother Teresa School we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce and related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth which will commence in Term 2. This program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research which highlights the importance of social support and the need the practise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks.
Mother Teresa School is pleased to be able to offer this important program and we are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved.
If you think your child would benefit from Seasons for Growth we would encourage you to talk to them about participating in the program. Every family who registers their interest with our Student Wellbeing Officer, by emailing christina.page@cg.catholic.edu.au will receive an information pack with more details about the Seasons for Growth program and an invitation for their child to attend.
Need more information? Please contact Christina.
Thank you to those who completed last week’s challenge regarding the Tea cups and saucers. The lucky winner drawn was Willem Van Galen from Year 3!
To keep a bit of Maths thinking happening over the holidays, this week’s challenge is open to the whole school!
Maths all around us!
Maths is around us all of the time. Examples can be found in nature along with many made creations. Over the holidays I would love for you to take some photos of the maths that you see around you. I have included a couple of examples to inspire you! At the end of the holidays you can either email them or print them out - be sure to explain the maths that you are seeing in your photos.
Send your photos via email to Mrs Blackwell catherine.blackwell@cg.catholic.edu.au or print them out on paper and put it in your notebag to send to the office by Friday morning of Week 1. The winner will be drawn at the end of our Friday Assembly.
MTS Community Council Scholastic Book Club - Copy
The Scholastic Book Club trial will resume in Term 2. Catalogues will be sent home with students, and parents can order online via the LOOP parent portal on the Scholastic website. No orders or cash will be accepted by the school, all orders must be made online. Order cut-off dates will be advised on Compass, and late orders or orders from the previous catalogue are charged a flat rate for home postage.
While school Covid restrictions remain in place, orders will be available for pick up from the school second hand uniform shop when they arrive. Dates will be advised on Compass. Students in years 5 and 6 may pick up orders themselves on the way into school, however all other orders must be collected by parents. Please only order if you are able to collect at the second hand uniform shop Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 8.30-9.00am. If you are unable to do so, please order direct to your home after the catalogue has closed for school orders.
A reminder that missing or damaged orders can be reported to Scholastic using their online contact information, and that out of stock items already paid for are usually credited to the LOOP account. Parents concerned about missing, misplaced or damaged orders are advised to wait until the catalogue is closed and use the home postage option. MTS Community Council parent volunteers will be running the Book Club, so please ensure any inquiries are directed to them via the office email or to Scholastic, rather than to school staff, teachers or librarians. We will be doing our best to make the trial run smoothly, and look forward to using school reward points earned to purchase additional books for classroom readers.
